Petro Logic boasts a highly experienced group of associates in the field of coal and organic petrology and offers a full range of services, from routine analyses to research projects. Our associates all have graduate level education in coal and organic microscopy, twenty years or more experience in this field and numerous publications related to both pure and applied research studies.
Our services and areas of expertise are wide-ranging
and include:
Vitrinite reflectance and maceral analyses of coals and dispersed
organic matter in shales
Petrological and geochemical studies of bitumens and petroleum source
rocks
Thermal maturity and basin modeling
Coal quality and technology including coking, liquefaction, gasification
and coalbed methane
We offer services in:
reflected and transmitted light microscopy
fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy
confocal lazer scanning and
electron microscopy
Through affiliated laboratories we can also offer coal analytical services and organic geochemistry of shales.
David Marchioni Ph.D. is President and Principal Consultant at Petro Logic Services. His twenty-five years of organic petrology experience include extensive service work for the coal and petroleum industries as well as geological and industrial research. David's research studies include the relationship between thermal maturity and structural history, chemical and petrological effects of coal weathering, the relationships between coal petrology and coal depositional environments, reflectance in low rank coals and the effects of coal composition on coalbed methane potential.
Judith Potter Ph.D. is the principal scientist in JP PetroGraphics and a scientific associate with Petro Logic. Judith has over twenty years of experience in coal geology, coal/organic petrology and in organic geochemistry. She conducts petrological and geochemical studies of coals, bitumens and petroleum source rocks on a research or service basis. Her experience and research publications range from vitrinite reflectance determination and maceral analysis of coals and dispersed organic matter to coal liquefaction, gasification, coalbed methane exploration, thermal maturity and basin modeling and reservoir bitumens. Judith works with reflected- & transmitted-light microscopy, fluorescence microscopy & spectroscopy, confocal Lazer scanning & electron microscopy.
Bill McDougall M.Sc. is President of Obann Resources and an associate in geology and petrology at Petrologic-Services. Bill has studied organic petrology at the graduate level and worked for several years at the Energy Research Unit at the University of Regina. He has specialized in the petrology of low rank coals and in petrological aspects of coal technology including carbonization, coking, liquefaction and gasification.
